What is a hash?
A hash is a short fingerprint of some text or a file. The same input always gives the same hash, and any change gives a completely different one, so hashes are used to check downloads have not been damaged or tampered with. Choose SHA-256 unless something asks for another type; MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for checksums but not for security.
